I guess this thread is an opening for almost any talk about tfp so it thought i might relate my experience and my current thoughts.
I actually find walking down the street more successful that meeting a girl that has the characteristics that a model should have than i do most of the model photographer sites.
The vast bulk of the girls on these sites have no real belief that they CAN be a model but post in order to be swept away by a night in shining armor to fame and fortune and have no idea of the work that will be involved. The huge bulk of them go into an anxiety attack as soon as they are offered a TFP shoot or even negotiate a paid shoot as they seem to believe that the first shoot is the last shoot and expect too much of themselves at that first experience.
Although I shoot very few TFP at present I now demand a deposit from each model prior to booking the shoot so they will have some sense of responsibility and I at least know they are committed and may be willing to put forth some effort as a model.
In my area there is little work for them so they are not very motivated to put forth a great deal of effort. However for those who have potential I will help them promote themselves in areas where there is work. But without this support they have no good reason to be committed.
Although i used TFP to learn my craft there was a period of time during this process that i did not consistently create images that had any value to the model. My first images did nto flatter he model and did not enhance thier career potential. At frist it was hard to get gbirls to come and shoot but after a while it got easier, and now i get mroe requests than i am interested in and generally charge for my services.
What allo photogrpahers should kwno is that they will find better and more professional and reliable models when they start to produce more valuable iamges for thier models. If you are a photographer and finding it difficult to find models or reliable model - blame or critique your work and not the model as your work is probably not in high demand for a reason.
What models should know is that the vast majority of FREE or TFP shoots will produce shots that have little or no value to them and in many cases they will learn no skills or learn the wrong habits and a typical TFP shoot may postpone their careers or simply ruin their potential if they had any. They should also know that the first photographers who contact them are usually the MOST hard up and in the most need to attract models. Of course this first list of inexperienced hard up photographers will likely be the group that that should be paying them if they have the wisdom to find a great photographer that is in higher demand first. In fact models should not wait to have a good photographer find them but they should select a small number of great photographers and limit their tfp shoots to that select frew.
TO me TFP is useful for professionals or very experienced people to share their relatively equal experience but the vast majority of tfp shoots are actually two or mofe people getting together to experiment and only when lucky will they produce anything of any value at all. Just as two people who try anything that requires skills they do have will not ever produce an exceptional result.
