Default Going back to film.

I just bought myself a wide format film camera. Can anyone recommend what type of film I should be using for studio work?

I've seen wonderful results with Kodak Portra 160NC for studio work. I, personally, however, have not shot it. Been thinking of running a roll on the 35mm but, have been lazy. The Portra NC is made for studio lighting... the VC version leans more torwards saturated colors.

I shot a couple of rolls of Fuji's Portrait film and was not a huge fan. Don't like the color rendition as much as I like the Portra. Experimented with a couple of gels but, again, nothing to write home about.

Have to agree with Luis. For print film I am pretty much a Kodak fan, the Portra is very nice but I tend to prefer the VC over the NC (Just a personal preference). Now Transparency film I am very much a Fuji fan, especially the Velvia and Provia lines.

For B&W the Fuji Acros is wonderful stuff as is Ilfords FP4 and HP5.

That's exactly what I decided on. Just bought 10 rolls each of Velvia and Provia, getting ready for my shoot on Monday.

Wide format, square format, or 6x7 - what film's are you comfortable with? For b/w I prefer PlusX (120 format) or with color neg probably Fuji Color Super HG. If the materials are going to the printer (litho) I'd usually shoot transparency, however all the printers today work with digital files so your materials can be scanned and returned as 'tiff' files.

I was shooting this weekend, and decided to break out the film camera.

Man, did I get spoiled shooting digital! When shooting a model, it was just impossible for me to break every 16 shots to re-load film. I shot 4 rolls, put away the film camera, and whent back to shooting digital.

I am sending the film out to the lab today, and see if it's worth the pain in the ***... If the film shots dont look better then the digital, my Mamyia is going back on e-bay.

Igor
Thats funny 16 shots, you where just getting warmed up and you had to reload. Things where very different when "film" was the only choice right. I wanted to shoot a role of 35mm prints also with my Canon EOS 630 that I have shot with for over 15 years but never took it out of program mode in all that time. But i figured why bother with another expense when I was shooting with digital. I will bet you also missed the LCD Preview screen also???

Although the shots did turn out great, in no way did they exceed the quality I am getting out of my digital camera. I would even argue that the digital shots are better.

I have since put the Mamiya 645 on e-bay, and sold it to someone who may enjoy using it more then me.
